Thanks to all of our runners for making 2011 the best Soaring Wings Half Marathon ever!
First, what is a pace group? Half marathons and marathons have pace groups with leaders who are committed to running even splits to finish at a specific time. Typically in a half marathon these are runners who are running 10-15 minutes slower than their typical race pace. This allows them to relax, encourage, keep the right pace and finish at their goal time.
One of the most common mistakes made in a race is going out too fast. All the training is done, you are at the starting line, the air is brisk and you are ready to fire out and finish the race you’ve committed the last 4 months of your life to. Maybe your first half marathon, maybe you are going for a personal record. As you cross Prince street and head up the rolling hills past the half way point you’ll start to slow and realize “I went out too fast”. The rest of the race is not very fun. A pace group will help prevent you from doing this.
Running with a pace group is not a commitment for the entire race. If you need to run slower on the hills and pick up on the down hills, that’s fine. If you get to mile 8 and feel there is a lot left in the tank, say good-bye to your pacer. They are there for you. They will set a pace you can use to run your race. But that is the key. Run your race, using everything you have available to you, including the pacers, to meet your goals.

The 2011 Soaring Kids fun run is lining up to be the best yet. Kids will run 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile or mile routes through the beautiful Village at Hendrix. Register online or at the event. Parking and the start and finish lines are in the parking lot of Southwestern Energy just north of the Village. Come early and enjoy Trunk or Treat in front of Panera Bread and Za Za’s Pizza and stay after the event to enjoy an outdoor movie.
